Matthew 6:33 – Seek First the Kingdom

The Verse
“But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” — Matthew 6:33 (NASB 1995)

What This Verse Means in Plain English
Jesus says your number one job is to chase God’s rule and His way of living. Don’t worry about food, clothes, or tomorrow. When you put the Kingdom first, everything else finds its place. It’s like a magnifying glass in the sun: focus on one point, and the rest catches fire.

Cultural Context (Hebrew – Gospel)
The word for “seek” in Hebrew is baqash (בָּקַשׁ), which means to search with intensity, like hunting for treasure. Jesus’ Jewish audience would have known the Shema: “You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart.” Seeking first the Kingdom means making God’s reign the absorbing passion of your life. The “righteousness” here is not self‑made goodness but tzedakah (צְדָקָה) — covenant faithfulness that acts justly and loves mercy.

What This Means for You Today

  • Stop letting worry about money, health, or the future steal your focus. Anxiety is the opposite of seeking first.
  • Start each morning by asking: “What would it look like to put God’s Kingdom first today?” Then do one thing.
  • Remember that “all these things” are added, not chased. You don’t scramble for provision; you seek the King, and provision follows.
  • Trust that God’s righteousness is not a burden but a gift that transforms how you treat others.
  • Practice baqash today: choose ten minutes to silently pray, “Your Kingdom come, Your will be done” — over your schedule, your family, your fears.

Closing Prayer
Baruch Atah Adonai, Melech ha’olam, asher kiddeshanu b’mitzvotav.
Blessed are You, Lord, King of the universe, who has made us holy through His commands.

Aneinu l’vakesh rishon et malchutcha.
Help us to seek first Your Kingdom.

B’shem Yeshua, ha’Melech ha’Ba. Amen.
In the name of Yeshua, the Coming King. Amen.
